It all started in 1984...
A 38 year old named Richard Fraser was sick of big business and corporations and thought he would give ownership a try.
He was intrigued with bicycles and worked in the industry for 2 years. Then in early 1984 he found the perfect spot on Avenue Road to start SPOKES. His soon to be best friend and future wife Gail and mother of son Alex & daughter Mary Ellen, was the part-owner/manager of The Conservation Store, from whom he sub-leased the space for his store.
On March 17, 1984 he officially opened Spokes, the 800 sq. ft bike shop, and sold his first bike on opening day.
Many years later the store is almost 4,000 sq ft and is now called "Spokes and Sports" to accommodate a wide variety of sports. After running the business by himself for 2 years, Dean Corrigan joined the team as general manager. In 2015 Richards son Alex came to the business full time and has worked with Dean and Richard to bring Spokes and Sports into the 21st century with new website and Facebook page. Alex and Dean now co-manage the store and are making changes to better serve the North York region. Although Bicycles are still a year round focus, hockey, curling, baseball, are a major a cores of the business as well. We also deal in disc golf, skateboards, scooters and many more sports!
Feel free to come by or give us a call any time. Chances are if you can play it, we carry it!
Thanks for thinking of Spokes and Sports!
